What is Reiki?

Reiki (pronounced Ray-Key) literally means ‘Universal Life Force’ in Japanese.  It is a totally safe, non-intrusive hands-on healing technique thought to be thousands of years old.  It is believed to have first been used by Tibetan Buddhist Monks, but was then re-discovered in the early 20th Century by Dr Mikao Usui, a Japanese Buddhist.

  • Rei:  The most accepted definition of the word “Rei” is that it means “universal” i.e. that it is present everywhere.  The more esoteric meaning of the Japanese character for “Rei” is “spiritual consciousness”.  This consciousness is of the Higher Self or God, which by definition is All Knowing.  It understands each individual completely, knowing the cause of all problems and what to do to heal them.

  • Ki:  “Ki” is the “Life Force”.  It is believed to be the energy associated with our thoughts, emotions and spiritual existence.  “Ki” is present all around us and is an energy which can be harnessed by the body and guided by the mind.

So combining “Rei” and “Ki”, the result can be defined as “the spiritually guided universal life force”.

The Usui system of Reiki is a very simple, but powerful form of healing, that has been taught and used in the UK since the late 1900’s.  Reiki has its own intelligence and knows exactly where to go and what to do – both for the practitioner and the recipient.  The channelled energy has a profoundly calming effect as it flows through the body, encouraging deep relaxation, whilst activating the body’s regenerative self-healing ability.  The word ‘healing’ being used in the sense of regaining balance, harmony and wholeness, addressing the whole person on the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels.

Reiki is a hands-on holistic treatment, given fully clothed in a quiet, relaxing environment and is safe for adults, children, mothers–to–be, babies and animals.  It is widely accepted that Reiki healing can be given and received equally effectively hands-off or via distant healing.
